Dr. Allen Cherer is a Charlotte, North Carolina-based Neonatologist with over 30 years of experience who has served in Level III Newborn Intensive Care nurseries across multiple states, providing care to thousands of infants and their families.
Dr. Allen Cherer graduated with a B.A. in Biology from the University of Virginia before going on to obtain his M.D. at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Cherer then completed his Pediatrics training at Kosair Children’s Hospital at the University of Louisville School of Medicine where he earned the Robert G. Spurling Memorial Award as the outstanding senior house officer. Following residency, Dr. Allen Cherer was commissioned in the United States Air Force Medical Corps where he became Chief of Pediatrics at the USAF Regional Hospital Minot (North Dakota).
Following his military service, he proceeded to a neonatal-perinatal fellowship in the Joint Program in Neonatology at Harvard Medical School. While there, Dr. Cherer participated in the Infant Health and Development Program, a national multicenter study of early intervention for low birth weight and premature infants. Results from the study continue to be published to this day.
An experienced neonatologist, Dr. Allen Cherer has cared for thousands of newborns and their families in Georgia, California, and North Carolina. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and the North Carolina Pediatric Society. He has been active with quality improvement initiatives sponsored by the Vermont Oxford Network (VON) to improve the care to infants and families affected by substance abuse disorders, as well as by the Perinatal Quality Collaborative of North Carolina (PQCNC) to further engage patients and families in hospital care practices. Dr. Cherer is also an instructor with the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the S.T.A.B.L.E. Program.
Having devoted his life to providing care to newborn infants, Dr. Allen Cherer appreciates the incredible promise and potential of all children.
